A family in Papadahandi block of Nabarangpur district allegedly had to mortgage its ration card to arrange a private ambulance after their newborn son died while undergoing treatment at Saheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital in Koraput. The family reportedly paid ₹5,000 for the ambulance to take the baby's body home for the last rites after Mahaprayana service was unavailable.

According to the complaint, Ambika Nayak of Dalaiguda village gave birth to a baby boy at Papadahandi Community Health Centre on September 29. As the newborn was underweight, he was shifted first to Nabarangpur District Headquarters Hospital and later to Saheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital in Koraput, where he died late on Thursday night.

The family alleged that repeated requests for a Mahaprayana vehicle went unanswered and that hospital authorities suggested burying the baby there or carrying the body on a motorcycle. No response from the hospital authorities or police was available at the time of reporting.
