Every day, children from Umej village in Lanjigarh block of Kalahandi cross the Ret River on foot to reach school as there is no bridge or proper road. The situation becomes more dangerous during the rainy season, while seriously ill patients and pregnant women are reportedly carried across the river on cots. Villagers have been facing this hardship for years.
