The mention of an October cyclone still raises fears among people in Odisha, given the state’s painful history of devastating storms. The 1999 Super Cyclone remains one of the darkest chapters, causing massive loss of life and drastically altering the geographical landscape of Ersama in Jagatsinghpur district. Odisha also faced cyclones in October 2013, 2018 and 2024, resulting in loss of lives, livelihoods and infrastructure. However, the lessons learnt from the 1999 disaster transformed the state’s disaster management approach, helping authorities protect many lives during subsequent cyclones. Amid fresh concerns over a possible cyclone, memories of Odisha’s turbulent October history have resurfaced.
