ONGC Strikes Natural Gas in Mahanadi Basin, 43 Km Off Odisha’s Konark Coast

Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) has struck natural gas in a deepwater exploratory well in the Mahanadi Offshore Basin, around 43 km off the Konark coast in Odisha, under the Samudra Manthan exploration initiative. The well, drilled using the drillship ‘Platinum Explorer’, was started on July 25 and reached a target depth of 1,623 metres, with gas encountered at around 1,441–1,452 metres. ONGC said the well has been flowing gas for three days with encouraging flow and reservoir pressure. Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri described the exploration milestone as significant for India’s energy-security efforts. Further appraisal and commercial evaluation will determine the scale and viability of the discovery.
