Former NTCA Additional DG and Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB) Joint Director Anup Nayak has reacted to the orangutan smuggling case. He said it is not yet clear whether the orangutans came from the wild or captivity and stressed the need to determine where they came from and why they were brought. According to Nayak, the WCCB should remain in coordination with agencies including the CBI, DRI, Forest Department, police and Interpol. An investigation is currently underway by the STF along with the Kolkata Regional WCCB. He said the rescued orangutans must be kept alive and raised concerns over West Bengal being a major hub for wildlife trafficking. He suspects the orangutans may have arrived by land and warned that if they came through waterways, it could pose a concern for Odisha. He also alleged that the arrested father-son duo may not be the masterminds and that others could be behind them.
