UPI Charges From October 15: 0.4% MDR on Payments Above ₹2,000, Merchants to Pay

A new Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) framework for select UPI merchant payments will take effect from October 15, 2026. Under the framework announced by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), person-to-merchant UPI payments above ₹2,000 will attract an MDR of 0.4%.

The charge will be paid by merchants and cannot be passed on to customers. For transactions of ₹75,000 and above, the MDR will be capped at ₹300 per transaction. UPI payments up to ₹2,000 and person-to-person transfers will remain free under the framework.
