Serious questions have been raised over the quality of work and alleged irregularities in the 5T Smart School transformation project at Binika High School in Binika, Subarnapur district, Odisha. The school, established in 1959, reportedly received ₹45 lakh for its transformation under the previous BJD government’s 5T programme around three years ago. However, the building now shows damaged ceilings, exposed rusted iron rods, cracked walls and leaking classrooms during rainfall. Students, local residents and representatives have questioned how the school deteriorated so quickly despite the substantial expenditure. They have alleged that the transformation appears to have involved little more than painting the old building. The project was expected to provide smart classrooms, an e-library and other modern facilities. District Education Officer Ghanshyam Meher and Binika BDO Sarat Bag have stated that the damage and quality of work will be investigated and action taken accordingly. The report also refers to CAG observations on irregularities in the wider 5T school transformation programme. Residents are seeking accountability and assurances about students’ safety.
