A report that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi raised written objections multiple times over decisions related to electoral rolls has triggered demands from Opposition parties for CEC Gyanesh Kumar’s removal. The Election Commission, however, has said that differences during internal deliberations are part of its functioning and that final decisions were taken unanimously. Under Article 324(5) of the Constitution, the CEC can be removed only in the same manner and on the same grounds as a Supreme Court judge. A removal motion requires the prescribed parliamentary process, including the required signatures and consideration by a committee before Parliament can proceed further.
