Rising inflation and food prices are increasing financial pressure on households, particularly in rural areas. Inflation reportedly rose by 0.71 percentage points in September compared with August. The sharp increase in the prices of essential food items, especially pulses and rice, has added to consumers’ worries.

Within a month, pulse prices increased by ₹20–25 per kg, while rice became more than ₹10 costlier. Tur dal has risen from ₹120 to ₹140 per kg, while moong dal has increased from ₹100 to ₹112. Fine parboiled rice, which cost ₹60 per kg two months ago, now sells for ₹80–85 in some places. Jeera rice costs at least ₹65 per kg, while ordinary rice has increased from ₹35 to ₹40.

Small hotel owners are also worried. Raising meal prices could drive customers away, while keeping prices unchanged could lead to losses. Traders warn that prices may rise further, while the rising cost of essential commodities has intensified the political debate over inflation.
