Allegations of large-scale illegal mining of laterite stone and morrum have emerged from Rengal Panchayat under Delang block in Odisha’s Puri district. According to local residents, excavations are allegedly being carried out on government land using JCB machines and trucks, with the activity reportedly continuing for nearly 40 years. Revenue records classify land in Jamuna and Jharpada villages under different categories, including grazing land, forest plantation and stone-bearing land, raising questions about the legality of the mining activities. Residents allege that the government is losing crores of rupees in revenue while local communities are facing problems. They have also alleged that information about mining department raids reaches the operators in advance and that villagers who oppose the activities are threatened with weapons. The allegations have raised serious questions about administrative oversight and possible protection for those involved. Junior Mining Officer P.
