The centuries-old Durga Puja tradition of Kataka continues during Sharadiya Durga Puja, with celebrations held at 172 mandaps across the city. The historic Vinod Bihari Balubazar Puja Mandap is regarded as the elder sister among the city’s Durga Puja mandaps.

According to the account presented in the report, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu visited the Vinod Bihari shrine in 1509 and performed Ghata Puja during the autumn Durga Puja period. Idol worship followed, and Sarbajanina Durga Puja was introduced in 1582. Devotee Krishnapada Das shares insights into the tradition.

The Banerjee family, which came from Bengal, has preserved the ritual over generations. The priests themselves make the idol, which is painted only in traditional colours. Since 2002, the mandap has featured a silver tableau weighing three quintals, adding to its distinctive identity.
