The BJD’s sudden change of stand on the October 8 Odisha bandh has triggered a political debate in the state. Senior BJD leader Pramila Mallik initially said the party would support the Congress-called bandh, but within around 30 minutes, the party clarified that it would not support the shutdown. The reversal came a day after BJD leaders, including Rajya Sabha MPs Manas Mangaraj and Sulata Deo and former MP Munna Khan, joined an opposition protest in Delhi over the SIR issue and the Chief Election Commissioner. Mallik said the BJD is not part of any alliance and maintains political equidistance from the BJP and Congress. The Odisha bandh has been called over demands including withdrawal of the MMDR Amendment Act, Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation and the resignation of the School and Mass Education Minister over alleged textbook errors. The contrasting statements have raised questions over the BJD’s political positioning and communication.
