Ahead of Nuakhai, preparations are in full swing across Western Odisha. In Sambalpur, newly harvested paddy, Kurei leaves, Saru greens and vegetables were offered at Maa Samaleswari Temple as a traditional gesture of gratitude to the soil, respect for farmers and seeking the Goddess’s blessings. The new rice will be used to prepare rice and rice flour, followed by Nabanna offering at the scheduled time tomorrow between 9:40 am and 9:45 am. In Balangir, the traditional Pahur Yatra was taken out in a colourful procession, carrying new crops, new clothes and other items for Nabanna offerings at temples including Pataneswari, Samaleswari and Durga. In Nuapada’s Mahulbhata village, migrant workers have returned home for the festival, while the village Jhankar continues the traditional practice of distributing new paddy and placing Kenda at doorways. Markets were also crowded with people buying Kurei and Mahul leaves, new clothes and other essentials, while organisations extended help to ensure the poor and helpless could celebrate Nuakhai. The festival is marked by new food, renewed relationships and hope, followed by Juhaar Bhet gatherings.
