Puri Swargadwar is facing concerns over firewood availability as the casuarina forest cover in the Astarang forest range is reportedly declining. The report raises serious allegations of irregularities in the plantation of 80,000 casuarina saplings under the Green Mahanadi Mission during 2024-25, across 32 hectares of coastal forest land from Sahan to Gangadevi. Departmental records reportedly show 86% plantation, but a ground-level assessment found saplings missing, with allegations that branches were planted instead of saplings. The Forest Department has attributed the loss of several saplings to seawater intrusion, while local residents have demanded a high-level inquiry. Puri Collector Divyajyoti Parida said a complaint has been received and an investigation is underway on the direction of the DFO, assuring strict action if irregularities are found. The Forest Department's response was awaited.
