The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) first announced support for the Odisha bandh and then withdrew its backing within around 30 minutes. Senior BJD leader Pramila Mallik initially said the party would support the shutdown, but later clarified that the BJD would not back the bandh and would maintain its policy of equidistance from the BJP and Congress. The reversal came a day after BJD leaders joined the Opposition’s protest in Delhi seeking the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

The sudden change in stand triggered political reactions. Congress criticised the BJD, alleging that the party had become directionless and suggesting pressure from Delhi. BJP state president Manmohan Samal questioned why Pramila Mallik changed her statement, saying she alone could explain the reason.
