Senior politician Soumya Ranjan Patnaik, recalling his days as president of Ravenshaw College, said student union elections during his time were conducted in a cordial atmosphere. He said students then focused on the development of their college, while elections today are increasingly fought with the involvement of political parties. Patnaik, however, stressed that elections are essential and should not be stopped. He said college elections help create future leaders, while times have changed and election-related expenses have also increased. His remarks come as student union elections are set to return to colleges and universities in Odisha after an eight-year gap.
