A riverbank protection embankment built at a cost of ₹13 crore along the Baitarani River has suffered damage within just 13 months. At Sathibankuda village in Chandbali block of Bhadrak district, over 100 feet of the stone-packing protective embankment has collapsed into the river, triggering concern among residents of 24 villages across four panchayats, including Aradi, Olag, Sundarpur and Nandapur. Locals have raised concerns over the effectiveness of spending crores of rupees on embankment protection. The Dhamnagar Water Resources Department SDO said the work had been handed over to NH-20 and could not be undertaken immediately due to the prevailing low-pressure system. He said work would resume within eight days.
