Bargarh’s ₹1,340.55-crore Gangadhar Meher Lift Irrigation Project is facing a major setback as damaged pipelines have disrupted water supply to agricultural fields. Farmers in parts of Bargarh, including the Gaisilet area, say irrigation has been stalled for months, raising concerns over crop losses and a possible drought-like situation.

Farmers are angry over the delay in pipeline repairs, fearing their paddy crops may dry up without timely irrigation. Project Additional Engineer Manish Panigrahi said rainfall caused pipelines to shift, resulting in leaks. Repair work is underway, and water supply is expected to resume within a few days. He added that the contractor would bear the costs if delayed repairs affect cultivation.

The project was launched to irrigate more than 25,000 acres across Bargarh district, particularly in Bijepur, Gaisilet and Sohela blocks. Its foundation stone was laid in 2019, and it was inaugurated on February 2, 2024. Questions are now being raised over construction quality and how the project developed major problems within two years, with farmers demanding urgent repairs.
