Balasore’s unique Badi Khela tradition is witnessing intense preparations ahead of Durga Ashtami. The Durga Bahini are training to showcase their skills with sticks before Maa Durga, with the younger generation also being trained ahead of the Puja. This year, the tradition has completed 100 years and entered its second century. Various Akhada Sanghas will demonstrate their skills on the streets before proceeding to the Hanuman Temple near Makalpur in Balasore to receive a salute. From youngsters and children to women and elderly participants, people across age groups take part in this distinctive form of self-defence before Maa Durga. With only a few days left for Ashtami Puja, vigorous practice sessions are now underway.
