Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar helped avert a major mid-air disaster after an Omani co-pilot allegedly attacked and stabbed him during Flydubai flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv. The aircraft, carrying 174 people, later made a safe emergency landing at Tabuk in Saudi Arabia. Reuters
Despite being seriously injured, Machchhar managed to resist the attacker and open the cockpit door, allowing passengers and crew to intervene. Two Flydubai pilots travelling as passengers subsequently helped take control of the aircraft and complete the emergency landing. Al Jazeera
The aircraft had reportedly undergone a rapid descent during the cockpit struggle. The passengers were later confirmed safe, while Machchhar was receiving treatment at a hospital in Tabuk. Authorities are investigating the circumstances of the incident.
