Israel was reportedly prepared to shoot down a Flydubai passenger aircraft after an Omani co-pilot allegedly attacked Indian Captain Smit Machchhar inside the cockpit on a flight bound for Israel. The aircraft, carrying more than 150 passengers, came under emergency scrutiny after the cockpit attack and loss of communication. Despite being injured, Machchhar managed to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers and crew to overpower the attacker, while other pilots took control and safely landed the aircraft in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. Reports say Israeli fighter jets were scrambled and airspace was closed as authorities feared the aircraft could become a weapon in a 9/11-style attack. The incident has also raised serious questions over the co-pilot’s background, recruitment and security screening. The suspect, identified as Omani national Hamam al-Hammami, is currently in UAE custody.
