Farmers in Balasore’s Nilagiri and Khaira areas have raised concerns over the quality of fertiliser supplied through cooperative societies. A laboratory report mentioned in the report found DAP and urea not meeting prescribed standards, while a separate report from Bartana Service Cooperative Society in Khaira described DAP as non-standard, citing higher moisture content and variation in granule size. Farmers say doubts arose after their crops did not perform as expected. The cooperative society said the fertiliser came from MARKFED, raising questions over the quality-control chain from procurement to distribution. The Agriculture Department has advised farmers in Khaira not to use the concerned fertiliser. The report also raises questions over responsibility and possible compensation for affected farmers.
