A major mid-air emergency unfolded aboard Flydubai flight FZ1073 travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv on September 30. According to Israeli officials, the co-pilot allegedly attacked Indian captain Smit Machchhar, causing the aircraft to plunge thousands of feet before passengers and crew intervened. The wounded captain managed to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers to overpower the attacker, while other crew members took control of the aircraft. The flight was diverted and landed safely at Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia with more than 170 people on board. The UAE has launched an investigation into the circumstances, motive and any possible prior planning. The co-pilot was taken into custody, while Captain Machchhar was hospitalised in Saudi Arabia.
