Odisha’s upcoming municipal elections have triggered a major political debate over the possibility of bringing back the indirect election system for Mayors and municipal chairpersons. Under the proposed system being discussed, elected corporators in Municipal Corporations and councillors in municipalities and NACs could choose the Mayor or Chairperson instead of voters directly electing them. Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra said the government is preparing for the elections, but the Chief Minister will take the final decision on whether the election will be direct or indirect.
