Cyclone Arnab: Ganjam Devastation Raises Questions Over Disaster Management

Cyclone Arnab has left Ganjam devastated, destroying houses, markets and roads. The October cyclone and subsequent torrential rainfall triggered massive floods, while landslides added to the destruction in Gajapati and Kandhamal districts, with soil sliding at more than 10 locations. The widespread damage has left several areas resembling Kerala's landslide-hit regions.

The scale of the disaster has raised serious questions over disaster preparedness and management. Despite advance warnings of heavy rainfall and possible danger, Ganjam was inundated following just one night of intense rain. Experts have questioned whether the massive flooding of the Rushikulya River could have been anticipated and whether administrative lapses contributed to the crisis.

As discussions intensify over accountability and disaster management, political blame games have also begun over the handling of Cyclone Arnab and its aftermath. Who is responsible, and where did the preparedness go wrong?
