Dara Singh’s Remission Plea Rejected by Odisha State Sentence Review Board

ଗ୍ରାହାମ୍ ଷ୍ଟେନ୍ସ ହତ୍ୟା ମାମଲାରେ ଦାରା ସିଂହଙ୍କ ମୁକ୍ତି ଆବେଦନ ଖାରଜ । ଓଡ଼ିଶାର State Sentence Review Board ଦାରା ସିଂହଙ୍କ ରିମିସନ୍ ଆବେଦନକୁ ଖାରଜ କରିଛନ୍ତି । ସମାଜ ଉପରେ ଏହାର ପ୍ରଭାବ ପଡ଼ିବା ସହ ଆଗକୁ ସାମ୍ପ୍ରଦାୟିକ ଅଶାନ୍ତିର ଆଶଙ୍କା ଥିବା ଦର୍ଶାଇଛି ବୋର୍ଡ। ଆସନ୍ତା ସେପ୍ଟେମ୍ବର ୧୭ରେ ସୁପ୍ରିମକୋର୍ଟରେ ଏହି ମାମଲାର ଶୁଣାଣି ଥିବା ବେଳେ ବୋର୍ଡର ନିଷ୍ପତ୍ତି ଆସିଛି । ଅଗଷ୍ଟ ୩୧ ରେ ବୋର୍ଡର ଏକ ସ୍ୱତନ୍ତ୍ର ବୈଠକ ବସିଥିଲା। ବୋର୍ଡର ରିପୋର୍ଟ ଅନୁଯାୟୀ, ଗତ ଅଗଷ୍ଟ ୧୫ ତାରିଖରେ କେନ୍ଦୁଝର ଜେଲ୍ ବାହାରେ 'ଦାରା ସେନା'ର କିଛି ସଦସ୍ୟ ପ୍ରକୋପକାରୀ ନାରାବାଜି କରିଥିଲେ। ଏହାକୁ ଦୃଷ୍ଟିରେ ରଖି କେନ୍ଦୁଝର ଜିଲ୍ଲା ପ୍ରଶାସନର ରିପୋର୍ଟକୁ ଆଧାର କରି ବୋର୍ଡ ଦାରା ସିଂଙ୍କ ମୁକ୍ତି ଦ୍ୱାରା ସାମ୍ପ୍ରଦାୟିକ ଉତ୍ତେଜନା ସୃଷ୍ଟି ହେବାର ଆଶଙ୍କା ଦର୍ଶାଇଛନ୍ତି।

The Odisha State Sentence Review Board has rejected the remission plea of Dara Singh, who is serving a life sentence in the 1999 murder of Australian missionary Graham Staines and his two minor sons. The Board cited concerns over its possible impact on society and the risk of communal unrest if he is released. The decision comes ahead of the Supreme Court hearing scheduled for September 17. A special meeting of the Board was held on August 31, and its decision was based on reports including one from the Keonjhar district administration. The Board also noted that members of the ‘Dara Sena’ had allegedly raised provocative slogans outside Keonjhar Jail on August 15. Dara Singh, who has spent more than 26 years in prison, had sought premature release under Odisha’s 2022 remission guidelines. The Supreme Court had directed the State Sentence Review Board to take a decision on his plea.
