Mahalaya Amavasya is being observed across Odisha, with thousands of devotees gathering at sacred water bodies in Bhubaneswar, Puri and Jajpur to perform Shraddha, Tila Tarpan and Pinda Daan for their ancestors. At Bhubaneswar’s Bindusagar, devotees gathered early in the morning, chanting mantras and performing traditional rituals. Similar scenes were witnessed at Puri’s holy water bodies and Nabhi Gaya in Jajpur.
According to religious beliefs, performing these rituals with devotion brings peace to departed ancestors and blessings of happiness, prosperity and the growth of the family. Devotees and priests shared their views on the significance of Mahalaya. Those unable to perform Shraddha or Pinda Daan on Mahalaya Amavasya can observe the ritual on Paya Shraddha during Diwali Amavasya, according to the report.
