Odisha has reached a significant milestone in tsunami preparedness, with 100 coastal villages now recognised as ‘Tsunami Ready’ under the UNESCO-IOC Tsunami Ready Recognition Programme. In 2026, 75 additional villages received recognition, taking the total to 100. The state has identified 381 tsunami-prone coastal villages and habitations across six coastal districts to be prepared in phases. Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari said the progress reflects the state government’s continued focus on scientific disaster preparedness and active community participation. The National Tsunami Ready Board conducted field verification and assessed awareness, preparedness and response mechanisms in coastal communities. Odisha’s programme is aimed at strengthening preparedness and building community-level resilience against tsunami hazards.
