Caste tensions have resurfaced at an Anganwadi centre in Ghusuramunda village under Muribahal block in Balangir district, Odisha, after tribal residents locked the centre demanding the removal of Dalit cook Punya Haripal and the appointment of a tribal woman. Haripal was selected on merit from six applicants. The dispute escalated after she reportedly cooked food for children on a supervisor's instructions, despite an earlier understanding that dry food would be distributed until the Sub-Collector's court delivered its final decision.

The controversy follows similar caste-discrimination incidents in Nuagaon village in Rajnagar block of Kendrapada district and Dewanpali village in Jharbandh block of Bargarh district, where objections to cooks' caste reportedly led to children staying away and Anganwadi centres being locked. Social activist Devendra Sutar warned that caste-based attitudes in centres responsible for children's early education and development could endanger their future and harm society.

Following earlier intervention by police and the Sub-Collector, the Ghusuramunda centre had reopened, with a temporary arrangement for distributing dry food. However, the dispute has flared up again, raising concerns over caste discrimination and children's access to Anganwadi services.
