The addiction to gambling is pushing people into financial ruin in Ganjam district, Odisha. During Kumar Purnima, gambling dens reportedly spring up in villages and towns, with lakhs of rupees wagered. Some people lose their life savings, while others even pawn gold or borrow money from friends to continue gambling. Unable to repay their debts, some are forced to migrate elsewhere for work. Despite the heavy financial toll on families, gambling continues under the guise of tradition, raising concerns over the lack of effective checks.
