Sugar prices have surged in Odisha, rising from around ₹40–45 per kg a month ago to ₹60, ₹64 and even ₹70 per kg in different markets. The sharp rise is affecting household budgets across income groups, while tea shops, snack shops and other food businesses are also feeling the pressure.

The source says wholesale sugar prices have climbed from ₹4,200 per quintal in the last week of July to ₹6,300 per quintal now. With Raksha Purnima approaching, the rise is also expected to put pressure on the sweets market.
