When will Dussehra be celebrated this year—October 20 or 21? Different dates mentioned in religious almanacs have created confusion among devotees. According to the traditions of Puri Srimandir, Dussehra will be observed on October 21, with rituals performed at Maa Bimala’s shrine. The festival will also be observed at the Kakudikhai shrine, associated with Maa Bimala’s symbolic representation. On the occasion, Ayudha Puja will be performed, and the Chaturdha Murti will be adorned in the Suna Besha (golden attire). Meanwhile, Dussehra will be celebrated on October 20 at sites where clay idols are worshipped. At Srimandir, Saptami will be observed on October 17, Ashtami on October 18, Navami on October 19, followed by the Vishrama Niti (rest ritual) on October 20. Puri correspondent Madhusudan Mishra discusses the differences in religious traditions and almanac calculations with Pandit Suryanarayan Rathasharma to explain the reason behind the differing dates.
