Who qualifies as a journalist? The Supreme Court of India has raised concerns that allowing every citizen to claim the title of journalist could create several problems. The observations came during a hearing on a plea seeking protection for independent and freelance journalists, as well as social media content creators, in connection with alleged police harassment of journalists during protests in Delhi.

Senior advocate Indira Jaising argued that Delhi Police does not recognise many independent and freelance journalists and demands Press Information Bureau (PIB) accreditation from them. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta questioned whether everyone with a mobile phone could claim to be a journalist, warning that some people might present events selectively or exaggerate them to gain popularity on social media.

The Court indicated that the distinction between accredited journalists, independent journalists and social media creators, along with the protections each category should receive, requires detailed consideration. These oral observations do not amount to a ban on journalism. The key question remains: who will recognise and protect freelance journalists?
