A major discussion has erupted over the reported introduction of charges on UPI transactions. According to the source, from October 15, person-to-person (P2P) UPI transactions will remain free, while a 0.4% charge will apply to person-to-merchant (P2M) payments above ₹2,000, with the merchant stated to bear the charge.

The report says the Union Finance Ministry has maintained that around 96% of P2M transactions will not be affected and that small merchants will continue under zero MDR. NPCI has also clarified, according to the report, that there is no platform fee, hidden UPI fee or monthly free quota charge for UPI services.
