Ahead of Ravan Dahan, the political debate over Ram Rajya and Ravan has intensified in Odisha. Minister Gokulananda Mallik said the BJP government is striving to establish Ram Rajya, where everyone, including humans and animals, receives justice. He said the government aims to serve the people and work for their welfare.

The BJD has criticised the state government, citing issues such as old-age pensions, question paper leaks, MMDR and rising unemployment as examples that challenge its claims of good governance. Congress MP Saptagiri Ulaka has also targeted the state government over its two-and-a-half years in power. Senior journalist Akshaya Sahu explained that Ram Rajya represents good governance, justice, equality and humanity, while the term Ravan is often used in politics to portray opponents as unrighteous or destructive.

The debate raises questions about the meaning of Ram Rajya in contemporary politics. Mahatma Gandhi viewed it as a model of universal democracy in which rich and poor enjoy equal rights. Transparent governance, public welfare and delivering benefits to the most disadvantaged are presented as its core principles.
