West Bengal may soon be officially renamed Paschim Banga, with West Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya saying the state government will bring a Bill in the Assembly for the proposed change. He said the name is intended to preserve the state’s historical identity and would replace ‘West Bengal’ in official usage. The proposal was raised while discussing the proposed Paschim Banga Bhavan in Varanasi. The state has seen several earlier attempts at renaming, including proposals for ‘Paschim Banga’ and ‘Bangla’. The 2018 Assembly resolution proposing ‘Bangla’ did not receive approval from the Centre. The report also recalls other official name changes in India, including Orissa to Odisha, Madras to Tamil Nadu, Mysore to Karnataka, Bombay to Mumbai and Calcutta to Kolkata.
